These days - with Christmas over and Daddy's work not started again - we all have lots of time to spend with each other.
Today we popped over to Brentwood Mall, drove up to Mt. Seymour (and turned right around at the foggy top) and then finished off the outing at Tim Horton's.
A good time was had.

Christmas 2005 in Chilliwack

www.flickr.com

We took our annual day trip to Chilliwack to spend some time with Uncle Dave and Auntie Bev. We all had a great time.
The weather was great, cold and misty, but the traffic was light and Chris Rea's "Driving Home for Christmas" was on the radio.
We stuffed ourselves with Nanaimo bars and Squamish bars, trifle and Glog, meat platters and mushrooms.
It is a great tradition to go out there and we look forward to it every year.

At the drop-in centre Dielle and Mom visit twice a week, Dielle made a sparkly crown and a teddy bear with eyes and a nose and everything!
I've never had a child who came home with handmade stuff - or even just a child - so I was thrilled.
You'll notice that she still hasn't mastered smiling and keeping her eyes open at the same time.

Auntie Jen made the pumpkin costume Dielle is wearing. Almost all of the kids in our extended family have worn the costume at some point.
We were helping Dielle practice her "Trick-or-Treats" at home, but she was getting plenty of experience following her cousins.

Though she's not even 2 1/2 yet, we took Dielle trick-or-treating tonight. We spent some time with Uncle Stephen, Auntie Jennifer, Taylor and Brody on their block then visited Uncle Nick, Auntie Claire and Jacob. We also dropped in on people who have truly been like family members, the Joos, the Boardmans and the O'Keeffes.
When we came home, Dielle showed off her Hallowe'en Cat Ring. When I asked her who gave it to her, she said Halmoni and Harabeoji, the Korean words for Grandma and Granddad.

I never get tired of saying, "Boy, every week there is a new development" or "She keeps getting bigger and bigger."
She is now 2 years, 3 1/2 months old. She copies almost everything we say and is able to make the words her own. She sees a construction site and says, "Oh, it's messy." She burps and says, "Excuse me. Is it rude?"
~
We bought her a new doll set. It has a diaper bag, diaper and wipe, snuggly/car seat, etc. She loves it. She knows the routine: changing the baby, feeding it, helping it pray...

We truly are lucky. We live near stores and bus routes and - most importantly - lots of parks. Just when we think we know all of them, we stumble across another one.
It's only 7 blocks or so from our place and it has lots of swings and lots of slides and lots of fun things to play on.
Here, Dielle poses in the big grass and feels Autumn's return to our neighbourhood.

The Seastrand

We all went out for a walk along the West Van Seawall tonight. A perfect evening. A cool evening after a hot day. We started the walk at the Seastrand, my grandparents' old apartment. We all have many many memories of being there, especially the Christmas visits when we used to watch the Carol ships go by.
Grandad would flick the balcony lights on-and-off, and inevitably one of the ships would focus a spotlight on us.
Those who knew Grandad knew that he slept in a bed on the balcony. Yes, it had an electric blanket.

Dr Beimers, Dielle's wonderful pediatrician, told us to give her less juice and more milk. So in the last week, she has nearly tripled her milk drinking - and I promise, it's her, it's not us forcing her! ;)
We can almost feel her growing taller and taller every day.

Every Saturday, we take Dielle for her swimming lessons. These days there are only 3 children (and their participating parent) in the class.

Dielle has not mastered blowing bubbles: she usually lets water in instead of blowing it out.

This gave me a real Daddy Moment: at the last lesson, the instructor Caitlin asked Dielle to show her how she blows bubbles. Wanting to please Daddy and the instructor, Dielle opened her mouth and let water in. I could see she was quite scared but wanted to make us happy.

That’s a moment I hope every person has the opportunity to experience.

Dielle turned 2 last week, and it seems that with the change of age comes a burst of developmental growth.

Her pronunciation has improved overnight: she says foot instead of ook and water (or at least waduh) instead of aya.

She groups words together more. Daddy glasses is not quite Shakespeare, but it shows a growing understanding of language.

Another recent change is her challenging of authority and her constant use of NO.

More fun is coming, I’m sure.

A visit from Brandon

Uncle Ivan, Auntie Mina and Cousin Brandon came for a visit. Comme toujours, Dielle took away every toy her little guest touched. She even covered the face of Greg of "the Wiggles" when Brandon started watching the TV. Dielle only let down her guard when the donuts came out. What does that say about her parents: They let her watch TV and eat donuts?

The girl on he left of the picture invited Dielle to contribute. They kept at it for a good 20 minutes. The girl took a keen interest in Dielle and paid her much attention.

Today is a hot Saturday. After Dielle's customary swim session - marked by a 30-minute crying streak - we caught the end of the Lynn Valley Day parade. Then we went to the LV Day festival and then up the road to the Englmann's for an impromptu birthday party for 6-year-old Brody. We gave him a pair of Super Soakers which he and Taylor took to the back yard for a cool off.

Dielle has taken three swimming lessons so far. I love watching her face in the pool: continual excitement/nervousness.
She's so anxious to get in the water, she doesn't want to wait for the previous group to get out.
For thirty minutes, we do various exercises : blowing bubbles, Daddy-assisted floating on the back, going down the slide, etc.
Even when we're on land, she'll say something close to "swimming" and get into position on the ground. She also likes to make her baby dolls "blow bubbles" face down on the carpet.

At the foot of Lonsdale, just east of the Quay, they have opened up an area of the waterfront that has not been accessible to the public in a hundred years. They are converting the old shipyards - also used for filming such classics as "Atomic Train" - into condos and a seawall.
The three of us went for a walk along the 700-foot pier they have. It's great except for the big spaces they have in the railing every 30 feet or so - more than enough for a curious child to walk through.

As the days tick away toward her second birthday, there are daily signs of how she is no longer a baby and more a human with a developing personailty and likes and dislikes.

More signs of her growing up:
- Last night she actually asked us to turn off the TV so she can go to bed! And at 8:30 no less!
- After only a couple days of absolute refusal to sit on the toilet, she is already anxious (as part of her morning and evening routine) to climb on board. She needs to have something to read and to have a couple sheets of TP to wipe, and she's content. And of course she gets to flush and wave bye-bye to complete the task.
Some may think this is not something to publicize. I think it is.

In so many ways, Dielle is growing up...out of baby-hood and way into toddler-hood and beyond. Her two-word sentences are still not very common but she knows that "ari" (sorry) makes the situation better, and that "aiyou" (I love you) make Mommy and Daddy happy.
Here we see her hard at work, emptying the drawer of its contents.
